My work examines my experience as a Black woman in America through (art) historical and social constructs like critical race theory, color theory, afrosurrealism, and feminism; often leaning on humor to highlight the absurdity, and sometimes horror, of these encounters. My imagery is inspired by cartoons, children’s book illustrations, music, and film; all mediums used for storytelling. Storytelling is the main focus of my work as I hope to catalyze conversations that aid in a broader understanding of marginalized identities. While with Cork Printmakers, I plan to continue exploring the Appalachian cautionary folktale of the Tailypo, a creature I see as seeking reparations, and the fickle nature of gender performance in a misogynoir world.
